The Comedians by George Paterson

To those who know him, he is cruel, misogynistic and misanthropic. To the general public, he’s a national treasure.

In London, during the long, hot summer of 1983, Dennis Sargent, a successful sitcom star turned game show host is about to be honoured by The Queen. On the eve of his investiture, however, the sudden death of an old collaborator raises questions he’d rather avoid. With his marriage a sham, a burning literary ambition left unfulfilled and a comedic edge dulled by a decade of populist inanity, Dennis  finds himself at a crossroads. On the brink of surrendering to his inevitable slide, he is blindsided by a recording of a young, electrifying comedian whose anarchic humour and reckless charisma burn with an uncommon brilliance. Recognising the rare, chaotic spark that Mitchell Frankenstein has, Dennis must choose: manipulate the situation to salvage his own legacy or sacrifice it for the prodigy who could outshine him. Mitchell meanwhile, faces a darker question: can he rise without breaking under the weight of increasing expectations and silence his own demons?  The Comedians is a bittersweet tale of fame, betrayal and rivalry, where two damaged souls fight for laughter, love, and a last chance to defy the gods of failure.
