I miss the days of going into Woolworths and staring in awe at that week’s Top 40 singles on display. Each containing 7″ of vinyl delight. Purchases made, back home and the singles were stacked on the record player, each dropping down in turn before the needle hits, a little static followed by the opening burst of sound from the speakers. Well, there might not be Woolworths anymore but we do have the 7″ single and Into Creative have a few crackers we would like to share with you, so read on and check them out.
Artist: Blueboy
Single: Stardust
Label: Precious Recordings of London
If shimmering guitars and ethereal vocals are your thing then Blueboy are the band for you. The Reading five-piece were a constant in the 1990’s before disbanding, but since getting back together a couple of years ago, they are going from strength to strength. Previous singles One and Deux were stellar but Stardust is perhaps the best to date. Gemma Malley’s vocal is celestial and dreamlike while the band are locked in, sending sonic shards of stardust through the speakers. A cosmic delight, just glorious.
This is a great single, an immediate earworm and hopefully there is more to come. It would also be fantastic if the band announced some live dates but in the meantime, check out this sublime record (also, their A Life In Numbers and Live At The Water Rats albums are more than worth a listen too).

Artist: The Veils
Single: Lungs
Label: V2 Records
The Veils have been around for over twenty-five years and have released seven albums to date with the next, Fragile World scheduled to drop in June. If the lead single, Lungs is anything to go by, the long-player will be red hot. The single is an assured piano led epic and singer Finn Andrews has never sounded so assured. The lyrics are questioning, confessional and if you don’t connect with this on some level, you are dead to good music like this. There is an understated passion in the way Andrews delivers his vocal, supplemented by the music which combined, simply soars to a point few bands are capable of reaching.
Talking about the single, Andrews said: “I make each album, generally, as a kind of atonement for the last. Asphodels was so quiet and introspective, I think I just wanted to make something strident and full of life for a goddamn change. I wrote the lyric for this years ago, while I still lived in London and I still smoked fags. We went into the studio with a lot of songs, but very little idea of the arrangements or instrumentation. It was truly exciting having no idea what this record would sound like and only a few weeks to figure it out. It’s mostly Tom and I playing everything, with Joseph McCallum coming in at times. It was all very instinctual, quite full-on, and scary at times – but a good kind of scary, not scary like the real world out there.””
The Veils are also touring extensively in support of the album later this year including a date at Glasgow G2 on 2nd December. For more on the single, album and tour – head to the band website here.

Artist: Brontes
Single: Asking For A Friend
Label: Last Night From Glasgow
A famous Glaswegian footballer once said “there’s a buzz about the place” and that phrase can be used front and centre for Brontes right now. A band I first become aware of a few years ago through the Last Night From Glasgow label (check out the Crowded Flat short set on YouTube), the news of their self-titled debut album (recorded at Beetroot Studios in Ayrshire) has been a long time coming but it will definitely be worth the wait. That lands on 21 April with current single Asking For A Friend out now.
The track is a great representation of the band, delectable pop but with an edge that channels Chrissy Hynde and Haim. Having sold out King Tuts and being the BBC Introducing’s featured artist of the week, everything is falling into place for the four-piece. They have an album launch show at LNFG Towers on 25 April and have also announced a set of dates for later in the year taking in Leeds, Newcastle, Manchester and London with support from Bogle.

Artist: Helen Love
EP: Some Fucking Love Songs
Label: Precious Recordings of London
Talk about making an impact, well an EP entitled Some Fucking Love Songs should grab the attention from the off and Helen Love does exactly that with these four tracks. The lead, An Ordinary Lovers’s Story is heartwarming, lyrically touching on those “do you remember” moments we can all relate to with our partner. The pleasure and pain, the trials and tribulations of a long term relationship is captured perfectly here. And therein lies the beauty of music, when a song connects to the listener (as this will surely do), it really is a special moment. I’m In Love With You is an airy groover that shouts good times from the rooftops, a 60’s infused snazzy belter that will have you grooving, moving and perhaps schmoozing!
The urgency of Plastic Heart is layered with a more fulsome sound with orchestral flourishes, the lyrics don’t miss a beat, barbed, scathing and direct! The closing New Flame maintains the standard, a mini story (as are the others) set to more infectious rhythms. In short, four songs mixing northern soul, pop, indie, doo-wop and a shed load more, Some Fucking Love Songs is a group of songs that you will instantly form a relationship with, and that’s OK!!

Artist: The Happy Somethings & Lost Signal
EP: Happy Signals
Sometimes the best collaborations happen by accident so when The Happy Somethings happened to mention they loved the Lost Signal track Overjoyed Android, it led to the two bands sending each other new music, which, over a period of time, has led to the release of five songs which make up the EP Happy Signals.
Lost Signal is the musical vehicle for Matt Couchman which provides the base for his electronica and dark beats. The name is taken from the phrase referring to the lack of dopamine neurotransmitters caused by Matt’s Parkinson’s diagnosis. The Happy Somethings on the other hand are steeped in jangle pop wizardry, espousing louche, sophisticated tuneage. Quite the mix of styles, so what about the music?
The opening Falling and Rising hits the mark from the get-go. The fusion of electronica, guitars, harmonious vocals and spacious keyboards works like a dream. The aforementioned Overjoyed Android gets an airing, now with additional vocals/lyrics, the sounds remain evidently robotic and sparse, warping the mind and leaving a slightly unsettling feeling, a song to challenge and it definitely rises to the occasion. Highlights is perhaps the space-age Lessons In Love (remix), it feels like it is from another dimension, trance-like.
